Sound tips to help make the most of your new Pro-series phone

“Pro” level phones that have multiple microphones and “noise-cancellation” are not the same as having a professional sound engineer working on your videos. Getting the sound dialed in on your videos is actually going to require adjusting a few dials. Without sound editing software, there are still a few things that you can do to improve your audio quality.

Using a lavalier microphone attached to your phone can give you better audio quality, whether wired or wireless. This alone can drastically improve your sound quality. If you’re shooting with the in-camera or phone audio, you’re going to be picking up a lot of ambient sounds that you don’t want, a lavalier microphone is very localized and will only pick up the sounds of you speaking.

Amature Rebuttal:

I’m sure that what I’ve got on my phone will be fine. The new phones have great audio, I think it’s something about noise-cancellation or whatever. It’s going to be fine! Plugging in an exterior microphone won’t make any noticeable difference to the sound quality. I really don’t want to deal with the cord running from my phone to my shirt, either.

Another tip for recording audio is to pay attention to ambient sound is to pay attention to ambient sounds, like planes flying overhead or traffic or any sorts of noises that you don’t want to have captured. We recommend either waiting until the noise stops, or moving to another area to record in, where there will be less background noise. Noise disturbances can be very distracting for people watching your videos, whatever message or tips you’re trying to convey will not be able to listen to you, they will be focusing on the annoying sound.

Yet Another Amature Rebuttal:

You’re going to be fine. Whatever you do, as long as you’re using a nice phone, the audio is going to be fine.
